A waterfront salt factory in Myanmar employed women to carry unrefined salt in baskets to the factory for bleaching. The basket weighed approximately 40 pounds and each one brought up by the women earned them 1 kyat. The average income earned was $3-5US per day.
They received one straw per basket that was brought off the barge. The goal was to collect at least 150 straws per day which amounted to approx. 5 dollars a day. They had a rotation system to rest the muscles in their neck as they baskets each weighed 45 pounds. Thanaka was applied to their skin to protect it from the sun.
